Spooky Tourism – Jack The Ripper Walk in London

I’ve never gone on a ghost tour or visited a haunted house, but a few years ago I did a Jack the Ripper walk in London. Was it touristy? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Hells Yes.

You see I was never someone fascinated with the whole Jack the Ripper legend. The only thing I knew about it was that Jack the Ripper was a serial killer who had killed some people in London, mostly prostitutes it was alleged, in the late 1800′s. The tour was informative, winding through different streets and alleyways in London. The tour guide talked about the various legends of who Jack the Ripper might have been. It was informative and fun, but not scary, unless you’re someone who is completely terrified of being out at night or doing some light walking. In fact the scariest part for me was after the tour was over when I got lost finding my way back to my hotel.

The tour I did was with London Walks. The tour started just outside of the Tower Hill tube station at 7:30pm and cost £8. I liked taking this tour, and I would definitely recommend it to if you’re going to London. Even though it’s not a ghost tour, it might be a bit too intense for kids.

Have you done any “spooky tourism”?

I would to do this!! I’ve always been really obsessed… sorry that sounds like i’m a crazy person… interested in the Jack the Ripper mystery and I’d love to actually do the walk in London… considering I live so close it’s awful that I haven’t. Thanks for the comment Jen. I enjoyed the tour, but I know when you live somewhere you don’t often think about doing the things in your hometown that are meant for travelers. I’m sure you’ll have a good times on the walk if you go.

A few people have said Edinburgh has some great ghost tours. Can’t wait to read about your ghost tour experience.

I went on a ghost tour in Savannah, Georgia. Parts of it WERE spooky, but that’s just because ghost stories tend to scare the crap outta me. Lol.

Savannah would be a great place for a ghost tour. Did you take the hearse tour? I think that one would even freak me out.

It always seems like real history is always more terrifying than the made up ghost stories.

I’ve heard Edinburgh has quite a haunted past. The Mary King Close sounds like it would be really interesting to see.

The tour was great. It really isn’t scary – I had no bad dreams – either that I’ve become desensitized thanks to horror films.

We went on the Jack The Ripper walking tour in London and really enjoyed it! You learn so much about Jack the Ripper but also about East London and get to see streets & alleys you would never find without that walk.

    • Alouise October 31, 2011 at 12:34 pm #

For sure. There was a lot I learned on that tour. Going down the different streets and alleys made the whole history behind Jack the Ripper seem more prominent.

We did a haunted tour in Edinburgh, which wasn’t really scary but we did get a nice walk and learn about some of the more terrifying aspects of the history there.

I went on a ghost tour in Edinburgh – it wasn’t too scary, but definitely entertaining. Also went to ‘The Mary King Close’ there – underground tunnels where people lived and died (a lot of them during plague)!

If I was in London, I would sign up for this tour straight away. Sounds great. Not sure I would be able to sleep at night though!
